Jewish tech-y in training (Welcome future employer!)

May 23, 2010

If you are reading this post, there’s a good chance that you’re a prospective employer. Welcome to my bloggy playground! I’m hard at work diving into the world of PHP, MySQL and Java with this book, which I bought using the remaining balance on a gift card from a previous employer. Down the road, I hope to add XML and HTML5 (all the cool kids are doing it) to my language repertoire.

Last week, I attended a conference on technology and Jewish education convened by the Lippman Kanfer Institute (find the twitter convo here: #je3conf). What’s my big takeaway from this conference? There is a MASSIVE gap between the technical literacy of Jewish philanthropists and the vision of Jewish developers who work tirelessly to create cutting-edge educational platforms like Open Siddur, Haggadot.com, and Media Midrash.

This book represents my attempt to bridge the gap. I’m a fast learner, and I love languages. Heck, I love communicating (blame my sociable Brooklyn Jewish mother). I’m confident that my passion for marketing Jewish endeavors (see Bible Raps, JTA) will be well-served by this “upgrade.”

So please excuse any mess you may encounter during maintenance, and look forward to a shiny new very soon :-)

Shvitz, My Yiddisheh Workout

April 23, 2010

What’s a Yiddisheh workout video without a little Jewish humor? Makes me want to hit the shvitz.

Young adult Jewish grantmakers seeking grant proposals

Denver/Boulder, CO: Roots & Branches Foundation invites nonprofit organizations – Jewish or non-Jewish – to submit grant proposals for programs that serve people in the seven-county Denver/Boulder area and meet one or more of the following objectives:

1. Promoting Judaic engagement and discussion of contemporary issues among adults age 40 and below

2. Promoting comprehensive access to elements of economic self-sufficiency for individuals age 40 and below, and their families, who fall below the Colorado Self-Sufficiency Standard

Interested organizations should review the complete Request for Proposals for a full description of these grant priorities and an explanation of how to apply. The Request for Proposals is available online at Roots & Branches Foundation’s web page at rcfdenver.org/initiatives_roots.htm, by emailing roots@rcfdenver.org, or by calling Sarah Indyk at 303.398.7452. The deadline to submit a grant proposal is Wednesday, Dec. 2 by midnight.

All hold hands, now…

Looks like I’m not the only one calling for a revisiting of traditional Israeli circle dancing…

I was told over the weekend that the hora originated as a Bulgarian folk dance.
